Whether you like betting on sports, playing poker or enjoying casino games, you’ve probably dreamt of hitting the jackpot and landing a life-changing win. There are stories of big gambling payouts every day, but all these are eclipsed by the massive progressive slot game wins enjoyed by a few lucky players.
So put your feet up, read on and imagine what you would do if you landed one of these huge paydays…
Undoubtedly the king of big payouts is the Megabucks slot machine. This Las Vegas legend has over 750 linked machines throughout the state of Nevada and with a starting jackpot of around $10 million, it’s no wonder it has produced some monster wins.
The biggest payout in slots history occurred on the 21st March 2003, when a 25 year old software engineer from Los Angeles decided to wager $100 on Megabucks in the Excalibur casino. Within minutes, he had scooped a mind-boggling win of $39,713,982.25. The unnamed player was in town to visit his family, and I think it’s safe to say that’s one visit he won’t forget in a hurry!
There are many stories and legends associated with gambling in Las Vegas and events surrounding the second biggest Megabucks win led to the formation of another myth, the so-called ‘Curse of Megabucks.’
On the 26th January 2000, a waitress called Cynthia Jay-Brennan scooped nearly $35 million at the Desert Inn, but tragedy struck just six weeks later. Cynthia was in a car with her sister when a drunk driver crashed into them, killing her sister and leaving her paralysed.
This tragic event led to more stories of the ‘curse,’ including tales of players dying shortly after hitting the jackpot and underage winners being denied their payout. There doesn’t appear to be any truth in these stories and most people regard talk of the ‘curse’ as just another Vegas urban myth.
‘Lightning doesn’t strike twice’ goes the old saying, but when it comes to Megabucks payouts that simply isn’t true. On the 15th November 1998, a retired flight attendant won $27.5 million from Megabucks not long after winning $680,000 from the same machine.
And 92 year old Elmer Sherwin defied the odds to win two multi-million dollar jackpots, although he had to wait over 15 years to do so. His first win came in 1989 when he bagged a healthy $4.6 million at The Mirage, before scooping a stunning $21.1 million at the Cannery Casino on September 15th 2005. He described his unlikely double as a “lifelong dream” and it’s hard to disagree with him!
If Megabucks is the king of land based casinos, then Mega Moolah is the undisputed champion when it comes to online slots wins. The game has a mega progressive jackpot of at least £1 million and is available to play at most online desktop, tablet and mobile casinos.
So what’s the biggest online slots win then? Well, although these payouts are not in the same league as Megabucks, there have still been some hefty jackpots.
The biggest online payout was landed on 3rd October 2015 by a 26-year-old British player called Jon Heywood. Jon earnt himself a place in the Book of Guinness World Records with his massive £13,209,300 payout (€17,880,900) on the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot slot.
Small stakes also led to a rich reward for UK slots fan John Orchard. Back in December 2012, John decided to try his luck with a few 30p spins and was stunned to bank a massive £5.88 million, meaning he enjoyed a very merry Christmas indeed!
And finally, a player called Klaus from Finland has described what it feels like to scoop a life-changing payout. Back in 2008, a 50 cent bet landed him a $5.5 million windfall, which came as a bit of a shock. He said:
“When I saw 5,556,753 flash up on my screen, I thought it was a US phone number. It couldn’t be a jackpot, I must be mistaken! So I just got up from my table, went outside to clear my head, and then came back in again for another look. That’s when I noticed $5.5 million sitting in my casino account!”
So the next time you’re enjoying a game of slots, just remember that you might only be a few spins away from being the next big jackpot winner!
